*SUGGESTION* (Shoutbox)

Posts

In my opinion, I think that a shoutbox should be added to the forums, as it usually draws activity from users and can be used as a sort of site-wide instant messaging platform. Recommended settings for the shoutbox are a 5 second message cool down and have video links be automatically "spoilered" for the user.

We have Discord and IRC already.

I don't even use either of those two.

That said though, maybe we could implement some sort of widget hooked up to the IRC or Discord; whatever's more popular. That is unless it'd be a massive pain to code, in which case I'd welcome the shoutbox.

The reason for which I am recommending a shoutbox is that no other external websites or applications have to be accessed in order to easily communicate with other users. Both Discord and IRC are external applications which require some sort of effort to access and are at times impossible to access for some individuals without some work (for instance, when I am at school I cannot access neither IRC or Discord without setting up a VPN or an SSH Tunnel).

I don't feel that it's really necessary, to be honest.

We had something like this when i signed up and it was used solely by senpai to get people on slack, which is what we used for communication a few months ago

Senpai was supposed to set up Subway, a webirc client, on the site, but he got backtracked with other matters.
Ill try passing back up the idea to him and see if he likes it.

Discord and IRC both can have web clients. They could just set one up like Rii said.

As I stated, not everyone has access to such web clients without going through the trouble of setting up a VPN or an SSH Tunnel.

i have plans to bring cometchat back (well, a self made alternative that doesn't rape our server with ajax requests).

if you don't know what cometchat is, it's basically a clone of the little chat window that appears in the bottom right hand corner of farcebook.

i meant to quote senpai when i said that. my bad, didn't intend for it to be a sarcastic reply to your suggestion.

That makes no sense.

Yes it does, I can well imagine some intstitutions having discord and irc ports on the firewall blacklist, but not lewd.sx.

lewd.sx -> lewdbook.sx

nah, it's just one of the things facebook does right.

Get a separate server for the IRC web-client, run on port 80/443 (or reroute traffic). You can embed a Discord widget in an iframe. Problem solved.

It's like that in a way, except that they use some sort of software that has most mainstream sites and such blocked. If users start to go to a site which is not blacklisted by the service which the school uses, then the system administrators will notice the traffic and then they will proceed to block access to the site. This has happened in many cases where I have introduced friends to some exploits in the system, then they show other friends, and those other friends show some other friends, causing the exploits or sites which are not blacklisted to be instantly blacklisted or the exploits patched.

Have you tried openvpn and the sorts?

I have tried other services but not openvpn. Only one of them worked, and then stopped working after about a week.
