I flew down to the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs late last year to visit family. While I didn't get to engage much in tourism - it was a sad occasion - one thing that struck me was the diversity of the local community. My extended family (practicing Muslims) had no problem finding halal steakhouses, a well-appointed mosque to pray in, and other lifestyle necessities. It's a far cry from what one might expect. Personally, I'm quite happy for them.
Last year and this year so far I've done a decent amount of traveling. Most notably a massive road trip throughout the mid-atlantic and new england area of the US. Baltimore, Philly, NYC, Albany, New Haven, Providence, Boston, Portsmouth, Portland...and a lot of nature in between. The Appalachian mountains in the backwoods of New York are very beautiful in the winter, and I really miss the smell of sea salt along the craggy shores up in Maine....not to mention the amazing food. I love the multi-cultural nature of all the aforementioned places, it's something I really wasn't used to seeing where I grew up out west. Other than that though, I recently went to an island full of alligators off the shore of Charleston. For being actual dinosaurs, they are actually pretty cute and lazy...
COUPLED It's very peaceful up there, considering how small Portland is. I like it, my kind of state. Be sure to get some shellfish if you make it. I imagine Canada is like Maine extended, but I'm yet to go so what do I know...but have fun in California. I haven't been to the west coast in a long while, but soon I'm going to have the opportunity so I might revisit if anything piques my interest...
COUPLED Oh hell yeah. Hope you're having fun on your trip. Hiking / backpacking is so much fun lmao. If I visit anywhere without dabbling in the nature if feels like I haven't really seen it thoroughly, you know? The one good thing about this country is just how much there is to explore within it
