Damn, I'm starting to think I lucked out with my cheap af motherboard considering how many points of failure there are on these things

To be fair, the components on a motherboard are really quite something - an array of little cubes pushing well over 100A in some cases. It's no wonder really that motherboards tend to be the least reliable parts of a PC in my experience.

Man, this Athlon looks so cool in its little white box. I still really hope my 3800X didn't get fried, though. And that MSI honors their RMA. I don't want any more terrible luck... ;~;

Something you learned at uni, Mal-kun?

Ehehe, nah, Gamers' Nexus/Actually Hardcore Overclocking ^_^'

It has been 3 years since I bought a PC, and I still haven't upgraded a single component.

5 days later

Christ. I spent three hours trying to get this two-bit mITX board to work, only to find out my SSD's SATA connector got damaged.

I'm so done with life.

Challenges I encountered whilst rebuilding my PC in the Enthoo Luxe II:

  • Motherboard went kaput

  • Massive migraine that lasted four days

  • mITX is a no-go, might repurpose into HTPC

  • Dual-system setup is totally worthless with 8-core CPU (thankfully not fried!) and discovery of SATA controller cards

  • NH-D15 somehow does not work with AM4 mounting kit I ordered, luckily just needed the standoffs

  • 1TB SSD rendered unuseable after SATA data cable ripped off the L-shaped plastic on the drive connector

  • Laptop back panel screws recessed deeply, delaying access to its M.2 drive

  • RX 5700 XT had its backplate bent, had to take it off and hold it up with a pen against the neighboring PCI bracket

  • Motherboard fixed earlier than expected, 28 days short of the usual turnaround time of a month

  • CPU fans still not clipped onto heatsink

You know what? I don't care. It can hotbox for a few hours. What's important is I've finally, finally got a desktop again! Thank god!

Geez... at least you got it working in the end. Seems odd that the AM4 mounting kit wouldn't work though. Did you not get it from Noctua?

SAS/SATA controller cards are really great. Though updating their firmware can be... a challenge.

Aye, it's a real mystery to me. I followed all the instructions, but the mounting pegs were just a few millimeters too close together for the NH-D15. All's I really needed was the standoffs though, so as soon as I swapped in my old mounting brackets, everything was hunky-dory. ^_^

My nexty project is gonna be to deck this thing out with more fans, then after that install some aftermarket RGB rings for the fans, and finally place Kirino, Misaka, and a Haruhi figurine in their rightful places. Should be fun. :3c

On another note, I'm also thinking of buying a few of those TeamForce RGB SSDs. The Luxe II has this tiny little window on the right side for displaying your drives, and I wanna make use of that someday.

shakes fist at RGB

At least Misaka will make up for it~ I hope the CPU temps are good even with the non-standard mounting?

I'll be building this at some point next week:

Just a commision for my mum's workplace, unfortunately, like every PC I've built in the last couple of years ^_^'

Pretty sweet little compact workstation. No fans, though?

The case comes with 3 fans, I think, which let's face it, is enough when you take into account the two CPU fans, and consider that the thing is gonna be practically idle 99% of the time. It's a pretty overkill system, but as far as I'm aware, the budget is just "however much the last one cost"!

Man, it's insane what kinda money some companies have to throw around. I read a comment once about that thousand-dollar display stand a while back, about how it's meant for tech companies instead of consumers.

Could be worse, though. They coulda bought - shudders - a Mac instead.

Hah, yeah. Though the value propositions are different for companies. It's usually more worth getting some silly thing that costs £500 that just works, than it is to get something that costs £50, but requires a lot of time to get working.

Also might be more worth getting the 1kUSD stand if that helps keep an employee.

But yes, it would be nice to have that kind of money to throw around >~<

8 days later

Aaaand the aforementioned workstation went pop. Worked fine outside the case, now the PSU has eaten two 5A fuses. 😐

Just ordered a 1 TB SSD to replace the one that's now unuseable. Between that and the two 10 TB HDDs, that should be plenty of room for games.

Fuck knows. Maybe I misplaced a screw somewhere, or pinched a wire. I just really hope it didn't break any of the other parts.

Alright, replacement PSU arrived today, and everything seems to work!

Well, I haven't put an OS on it yet, but it hasn't gone bang, so that's progress.

Oh, and I haven't put the ODD in, since that's the only thing I've yet to put in, and I'm scared of blowing this PSU up as well if it happens to be the culprit.

How'd it turn out, cutie? c:

Also, your gal just got a brand new 1TB SSD, but setting it up was a major pain. For like half an hour I figured I had a defective unit, and I thought I'd accounted for B450's limitation of only four SATA ports when an M.2 drive is connected. Furthermore, the Tomahawk has four SATA ports right next to each other, and an additional two near the southbridge. So you'd expect the extra two to be SATA5 and SATA6, right? Well for whatever reason, they put both of those alongside SATA1 and SATA2 in the center of the board. It boggles the mind. >_<

Ah well~, water under the bridge. I can't wait to install all the games I'll never play!
