The new build is coming along pretty nice~

That's quite a lot of free space there~ I don't think the figurines will even take it all up!

The waifus add an additional 40 FPS.

... yes, it's horrendous. Especially the Phanteks Halo fucking taped to the GPU power cable. I kinda had to limit myself to avoid migraines. But at least I know this case was worth it. ^~^

redacted

But Misaka will get cold! How come the PSU isn't where it normally is~?

Aside from the halo taped on there, it looks good!

But why redacted indeed~

See that little partition behind Kirino? That's actually the case's version of a PSU shroud. That giant hole on the left is meant to accommodate add-on brackets for a mITX system or a secondary PSU, but I haven't been able to find the plain backplate to cover it again. ^^'7

And I just really didn't like my cabling job, honestly. Luckily the sun came out, so I was able to touch things up and get a really nice shot of Kiririn and Misaka. This one, I'll keep. c:

Ooh, it looks much nicer in this light! And yes, it looks far better without that fan ^_^'

When you say add-on brackets for a mITX system, do you mean like, a second PC? Because that would be insane lol

Right, though? My original plan was to use it as a streaming PC/NAS host, but that kinda fell through after I discovered the joy of SATA controllers. I do still plan on getting crazy with this thing, though. First a triple-radiator open loop in this case, then a 156 TB watercooled Linux server in another. Mind, I don't expect to accomplish the latter till the very end of the decade. ^_^'

Woah, you planning on starting a hugely successful youtube tech channel or something? 156 TB!

Hah! Naw babw, more like split them into three 4-disk RAID 6 arrays (Try saying that five times fast.) of swashbuckled anime, and use the remaining 12 TB disk for a web server and NextCloud. I'd likely never fill it, so maybe I'd cordon off individual terabytes for my friends. Double that for you. c:

Of course, this is kind of the definition of a halo project. I'll need that cash if I move somewhere. ^^'

Hmm, my my only issue with having 4 disks in a RAID6 setup is that you're losing half the storage to redundancy. Well, not like you'll be short on storage anyway, but it does seem rather cost ineffective!

And thank you for the future concern! As long as my GSuite account isn't banned, I shouldn't need the extra offsite storage, but ya never know~

Ah yes, the moving out dilema. I am also finding it very frustrating >_<

(I wonder how deep 2lewd can go with nested quotes~)

Just gonna steal @[deleted]'s layout, buut with a twist!

Unlike the folks before, I'm also gonna share my personal use for the system, my philosophy whilst building it, and how it's performed thus far.

I don't wanna be the gal just screaming out into the void, though. You guys don't hafta share a giant post like this, but I wanna hear you guys tell me about your personal systems too, and what they mean to ya, 'kay? ^^

Pics

Name of System

  • Cotton Candy

Purpose and Philosophy

  • Who says you can't have it all? When I bought a full-tower case, I knew from the start that I'd be pursuing the absolute maximum amount of performance at the minimum cost necessary. Nearly every component in this build has a much more expensive "premium" alternative, but when some savvy shopping will save ya a thousand bucks in the long run, it's well worth it.

  • Color me weird [pun intended], but I've always believed that RGB LEDs oughta be functional before they look cool. There's a reason I've stayed away from "rainbow puke" effects and stuck with solid colors, since it lets me inspect motherboard headers whenever the case is open.

Performance Results

  • In the end, though, the system's main purpose is to play games and render anime at 144 frames per second. Both of those are CPU and GPU-intensive tasks, so I've done my best to maximize airflow whist minimizing cable clutter. I'd reckon it works well. ^^

Hehe, well, you already know what my opinion on RGB is, buuuuut, I must say, your build is really pretty! Pretty and pink ^_^
I also like the braiding on the coolant lines~

The only niggles I have are that you used a single 6+2-pin PCIe power cable to power a 2x(6+2)-pin card (probably not a problem unless you're OCing loads), and that the GPU is plugged into the third PCIe slot, which on your motherboard is connected to the chipset, and is only a x4 interface, whereas the top one is x16 directly to the CPU.

If I may suggest a reason for a dual system build... one of them could be a FreeNAS system?

Thankya for the feedback, mal-kun. It means a lot, you know. ^~^

Good catch regarding the PCIe slot. I'd placed it down there ages ago to give the best platform for photographing Nendoroids, buut, given I've taken out the white fans I used to project lighting into the rest of the case, I'd reckon it's a moot point. I've also been having black-screen issues after trying to run triple monitors recently, so I wonder if that's related to the lower bandwidth of that final slot.

I'll also be adding a small expansion card to one of those x1 slots pretty soon. I'm not quite sure how, but the pins on one of my motherboard's two USB 3 headers got bent, and despite working with pliers, I can't quite get it right again. >~<'

No problem ^~^

I've heard about others having black screen issues with newer AMD cards as well, so it may well be a driver issue! Hopefully moving it to the top slot will fix it though. It's not unheard of for PCIe cards to run more reliably on a direct interface to the CPU.

Eugh, I have no idea how I haven't broken a USB 3.0 header yet. Those things are just terrible.

Right, though? I mean, I get needing more pins to deliver data or whatever, but could ya at least design a more robust connector? I'm really, really happy I went full ATX, otherwise I'd literally have to RMA a $200 motherboard for a component I got for twenty bucks as an expansion card. >_<'

As for the GPU... I ran a benchmark and got around a 500 point gain on Firestrike Extreme. That might have to do with the card being able to pull more air into its cooling fans, but it's still appreciated. ^~^

On another note... One thing that's surprised me is the difference in ambient temperature over time if I have all my RGB accessories turned on. LED lights might be a lot cooler than an incandescent bulb, but they still put out a tonna heat. Even without my receiver [which woulda turned this place into a veritable sauna], it still gets upwards of 81F/27C in here, a wee bit toasty for my liking.

Have you seen the USB Type-C header? Far superior.

I'm not really sure how much better 500 is, but it seems like a pretty big number~ But it is surprising how cooling can affect modern GPU performance. My 290X felt like a new card when I water cooled it.

LEDs can get a bit hot, but... a significant rise in ambient temps would surprise me a bit. It's not like they're putting out 1000 lumens of light. What is the ambient temperature delta?

Also, have you seen this? Looks like it might be worth trying out when it comes out!

I have~! The Luxe 2 has one, though sadly my motherboard doesn't have any headers. Although, four front USB A's are plenty enough I'd reckon.

One thing I don't like about my case, though, is the placement of the Reset button. Instead of being next to the flush power button on the top, it's a teeny-tiny little button in the front panel, right next to the audio jacks and integrated RGB controls. I actually disconnected it from the motherboard, precisely because the last thing I wanted was to fat-finger something in the middle of a crucial task. >_<'

As for temperatures from LEDs... I feel that comes down to a lot of different factors, on second thought. For example, I've felt quite hot today and been sweating a lot, but that's because I had a close brush with a migraine. My trusty alarm clock says it's 75F in here, and that's in spite of the GPU running rather warm, so I'll go by that...

I did~, actually! It's pretty amazing, I'll deffos check it out... ^~^

On another note [So much new hardware stuff to talk about!], did anyone see the reveal and demo of Nvidia's new Ampere GPUs? And more importantly, the price? If the benchmarks are even half of what the marketing charts say they are, AMD is gonna have to play some serious catch-up with RDNA2... ^^'

Hmm, AMD's GPU department has really been falling behind lately, but they actually support Linux. So no nVidia for me! I'm hoping they manage to make a Ryzen-like comeback, but I imagine that'll take at least another 2 or 3 years, if it ever happens. I think they got rather lucky given how Intel have been stuck at the same CPU process since what, Skylake?

It really is a marvel how slapdash everything's turned out, especially given the length of time they put off the reveals and releases. ^^"7

What card are you running right now, hun, and what're you hoping to use it for? I'm on a triple-fan 5700 XT, and it does great if you're targeting 1080p at 144Hz.

I'm interested to find out what Big Navi will bring to the table. Though given AMD's recent track record with GPUs, I'm not holding my breath. Though given my gaming days are mostly behind me, I'd probably be perfectly happy with a 5000 series.

I should finally be getting a desk soon! Though IKEA was a bit annoying... One part we had to order online, and the other we had to buy in-store. The online one is arriving on the 11th, and the store ran out of stock by the time we got there 😐

I'll probably go to a store further away tomorrow where I can just buy both parts, and save the £39 delivery.

Congrats! It's probably best. IKEA's shipping fees still tank the total price over here. Luckily our store is really close by.

Eugh, looks like we'll have to go ahead with the delivery after all. They did have stock in the store, but the box physically wouldn't fit in my car without removing a door >.<

Seeing how scuffed Nvidia's 3000-series launch is so far, I'm hoping grabbing Big Navi won't be too difficult, but I'm probably being overly optimistic here. I might just settle for a 5700 XT at the end of the day.

Agh that's a shame. I hope your wallet is spared!

Well not really, because it just means we need to spend the extra £39 to have it delivered! But my mum's the one paying for it anyway ^_^''

I decided I'd finally settle on a color scheme for my case lighting... I must say, I'm rather chuffed with the results. ^~^

Not gonna lie, that looks pretty dope! Very nice ^_^

D'awwwh, thankya love! I appreciate it. That's the culmination of over a year's worth of aesthetic experimentation. :3c

To be honest, part of me is disappointed that there's nothing I can really do to expand this particular build. Sure I could maybe install custom watercooling, or maybe transfer my stuff to the be quiet! Dark Base 900 Pro in an inverted layout - my desk is oriented such that my door is on the right, so this would allow my PC to be on my left. But the case is expensive for one, and lacks airflow compared to my current case.

I have seen some rather nice mods for the case, though. Given how the entire thing is built to be taken apart rebuilt on the opposite side if you see fit, it lends itself surprisingly well to mesh mods as seen here. ^_^

I know we talked earlier, but I'm still so, so happy for ya, mal-kun. It was a huge QoL improvement when I got my first decent-sized desk. I reckon it'll be the same for you. <3

I saw a good deal on a 5700 XT and I went for it. Currently awaiting the buyer to ship it off first thing tomorrow morning. 😃

Ooooh~, nice hun! What variant of the card? They all perform the same mostly, but it'll be nice if ya got one with a quiet cooler! Alternatively, I've heard the reference design is great if you ever wanna watercool it. ^~^
