As far as I am aware, it remains 6 teams up to 8 worms each since a few years ago and it stays that way ever since.

Any more than that and your game will definitely start lagging big time, which may cause some players to be ejected from the match to compensate for the high ping rates or even crash your computer. In addition, the randomly generated maps will not fit in all of these worms that much, so it is better to err on the side of safety.

For those who don't know what Worms is, it's a turn-based (strategy?) game that involves killing the other teams' worms with various weapons. You can get it from steam, though multiplayer works fine from other sources, as long as you get version 3.7.2.1. It seems to run ok in Wine as well.
