Payday 2 adds microtransactions, stat-boosting skins, crates

Posts

Payday 2 developer Overkill once said, "We've made it clear that Payday 2 will have no microtransactions whatsoever (shame on you if you thought otherwise!)," which was true until today's update.

The Black Market update has added the ability to earn safes at the end of matches that can only be opened with a drill item that costs $2.49 in real-life money. There is currently no way to earn drills just by playing the game. These safes contain exclusive weapon skins which may boost stats or grant special modifications to your gun.

Quite sad, really. The game's become pay to win, along having to already spend money for the game itself, and over $100 in DLC. The game did quite well in terms of reviews and gameplay initially, but in recent years it started to face backlash from fans and customers alike who witnessed undelivered promises, bad PR campaigns, and rude statements from the developers.

Interestingly enough, 2 years ago, the devs promised never to use microtransactions:

Overkill Software's upcoming heist-themed action game Payday 2 will not feature microtransactions, lead designer David Goldfarb has confirmed with GameSpot.

Asked if Overkill Software anticipated putting microtransactions in the game, Goldfarb bluntly stated, "No. No. God, I hope not. Never. No."

In addition to the update, the game is now fully integrated with Steam inventory and Steam marketplace.

Wait, so was that a maybe?

But really, wow. I'm pretty shocked.

Isn't Payday 2 COOP only? I never played the game before been seen some of my friends play it on steam. Everytime it went on sale I was always tempted to pick it up but I guess I made the right call and never did.

Single-player and Co-op. Never got any DLC, thank god.

Kinda sad for people who got the game full-price, got the DLCs, and still have to cash in more.

Pretty bad for overshill that its not working like they hoped for, so far in those recent years we pretty much started to boycott when we were seeing a pattern but never caught on due to they were doing alright so far and fan feedback are pretty positive but when the hypetrain stuff thats when the community started to realized they were paying for shitty 2-3 day missions and new weapons that they wouldn't use. not to mention the update added more levels for grinding with the 30k online players event and getting rewarded by making people pay 2.50 for drills to open up safes(csgo crates) thats probably a big redflag for the people who played even the veterans with 1-5k hours into the game

I got the game on a massive discount once, tried to get into it, but it got really... confusing. I mean, the game seems fun, incredibly so, and everyone I know who played it confirms it - but it's certainly not the easiest thing in the world getting into it. And, given the stock price and all the DLC, the game's more of an exquisite pleasure for the chosen ones.
I mean, really - for a multiplayer game, it doesn't try too hard to compete with other games on the market. It does offer much, but it's not too easy to get into, and given the twice cheaper CS:GO, free-to-play Dota 2 or League of Legends, or even Rocket League, which costs similarly much, but already skyrocketed in popularity, it's a tough call getting the game. And now that the game finally gave into microtransactions, it's not bound to get better. Especially given the Pay to Win model, unlike other games I mentioned, where the payments are for things purely cosmetic in nature.

Microtransactions are one thing, it seems like the community might've even been willing to settle for that. But the stat-boosting skins were really the final tug to tip the boat over.

It also gets a whole lot worse: http://www.pd2stats.com/

wiat... didn't i put this in lewd news????  OMFG >_< I can't believe I forgot!!!

Well, If you want to read a fun article on the backlash... i recommend this :

Metabombed

They deserved to get metabombed imo.

Hope they get bombed so hard their overall score is 0/100 across the board.

It disappoints me that they had the audacity to say "shame on you if you thought otherwise" when it came to microtransactions, then a couple years later slip them in. I didn't have hundreds of hours clocked in like some of my friends, but I enjoyed the game enough to buy the GOTY edition, and actively play it with them every now and then. I also appreciated the company behind PayDay 2. Sadly, they've taken everything I've felt and thrown it into the trash. I no longer respect them. The game is still great, and enjoyable but I'll never install it again on my PC. My friends with 2-3 thousand hours clocked in no longer wish to play the game, and I don't blame them. Overkill fucked up, and they don't plan on doing a damn thing about it.

If anything, it sounds more like they're even defending themselves for their actions. According to Kotaku, they even said it's partially the fault of gaming and media sites for "misconstruing" facts, when all they really did is just report what happened: what they promised, and what they broke.

they tried justifying it by saying they've expanded (team wise) and need more revenue to make up for costs.
