I think that the sense of suspense is what makes an anime better that the rest. If an anime makes you want to watch the next episode with every moment and doesn't give the next move away, or they make the obvious seem original and still exhilarates you. To me that is what makes an anime better than the rest of others. Of course other qualities make or break an anime, like music and the animation, but this is what makes an anime different from everyother anime, a prodigy in a group of talents.
What makes an anime better than the rest?

Mainly the plot and message it tries to send out. Though some animes are purely awesome thanks to action and humor. Bottom-line, it comes down to each anime itself.
multiple things:
The story.
The character development.
The quality of the art/audio.

By far better than most American cartoons
Guys lets be honest-
Art style stole most of us over.
I personally like it, if it got good ecchi content.
I agree with that too but if the ecchiness is too much and takes away from the story then it is a no for me, but i do agree with your point.
The thing that makes an anime different from others is simple. Attachment. Getting attached to the characters in the anime will want to make you keep watching it. Well at least that's how I see it.
