No Man's Sky

With release for PS4 just a day away, and 3 days away for PC. Curious if anyone is gonna pick it up and play, what goals you might have, and what you think of the game currently.

Personally I might pick it up when it releases on PC, I'm very interested in a space sim where I can load up and just explore casually while sipping on a drink. I don't think this is a game I'll grind hardcore, or even put too much effort in. Though the trading has me interested and if it is any good I might invest myself slightly more. From what I've seen from trailers, and interviews it seems like the game should be quite enjoyable. Apparently they have a day 1 patch that is quite impressive, didn't read the patch notes though to save myself from being spoiled.

I'm not really excited about it because I expect to be disappointed. According to the leaked copy, the game is not limitless like it was supposed to be. I don't think that a day 1 patch will be able to fix that. Also I hate day 1 patches because the game should be finished before they ship it out, I shouldn't have to download a patch to have the finished game. What if I buy the PS4 version in the future when the PSN servers are shut down? I guess I'll just be stuck with a gimped version of the game that the developers insist that "players will not experience." Unless of course the players have no internet access.

I am sure I will pick up the game eventually when it is on sale but to be honest, it just seems like a bunch of empty promises.

Which is why I didn't bother getting too invested in keeping track of it. I didn't wanna disappoint myself when it didn't live up to the hype. I don't know much about the game being limitless or not. I didn't pay attention to anything regarding the leaked copy, but it seems quite expansive. So even if it isn't limitless, there at least seems to be a lot to explore to make up for it not being limitless I suppose. I just read the patch notes, and it seems like a lot of it was tweaking current systems, fixing exploits and bugs, making adjustments to planet generation algorithms, and adjustments of galaxy size algorithms. Nothing like what I'd heard about the update being some huge thing. Most notable bit is "The Three Paths – there are now new, unique “paths” you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience." Which is the only real addition to the game, as far as I can tell.

That being said I've been watching streams most of the day and it appears to be exactly what I expected it to be. A space sim, with small flavors of other stuff. Lots of gathering, & hoarding. Not surprised, nor disappointed.

I'll wait for reviews/opinions.

Using the next couple days to watch Twitch and get a vibe for the game. Though I'm pretty much decided on pre-ordering it because it sounds like some buddies want to get together and play it all at once and see how different everything is from one another. Plus I get the Z95 Headhunter looking ship. Thats cool too.

Reading about NMS, I can't help but draw a personal comparison between it and Overwatch. From what I've seen, the critics say similar things about both: They cast a wide net, but have the depth of a puddle.

If one considered just the games themselves, they'd probably be right. Served cold, Overwatch boasts innovative mechanics and a unique artstyle; but has no campaign mode, no ability to play against bots, next to no options for custom games, and essentially zero ingame story. However, to end it there would be downright criminal when one considers the incredible amount of extra content Blizzard has created to flesh out the gameworld. I'm talkin' webcomics, animated shorts; even a full-fledged, printed comic book coming out this year! And don't even get me started on the fanbase. From dozens of in-jokes, voiceovers of fan-comics, and heaping mountains of fanart (And the porn. Can't forget about the porn.), the Overwatch fandom is one of the largest and dedicated I've ever seen. It really gives you the impression that the game has a soul, which is something I haven't said since those halcyon days of Halo 3.

Now let's try NMS on for size. Again, an extremely innovative concept (It's like Elite crossed with Noctis IV!), but at its heart it's very simple: You walk around planets, collect resources, shoot robots; then you hop in your ship, fly around space, trade resources, and blast pirates. I hear there are gonna be some interesting features (like warring factions), which is nice, but like all procedurally-generated games they're likely gonna be nearly identical to each other. And on that note, I can't help but wonder what the devs were thinking  when they said we wouldn't be able to customize our ships. Like, for Pete's sake, it's 2016: At least give us the option to put some stickers on it a la Forza Motorsport. The lack of customization in a game that has you spend most of your time alone is more than insulting; it's enough to dissuade me from preordering it.

I want the game to succeed. I really do, despite being its dev's first project. But my only fear is that it's gonna end up for most people like solo Minecraft did for me: A lonely game, with unrewarding exploration and nothing worthwhile to look forward to.

I had some initial interest in the concept because a space exploration game sounded comfy to me but I was a bit put off by how the different worlds seemed to just be palette swaps of each other and mostly stopped paying attention to it. The gameplay also seemed a bit lacking from what the devs had been showing off. I understand that they don't want to spoil the player's experience and I might have just become overly cynical towards these things but them displaying so little content set off red flags for me especially when coupled with this leaked copy going around. I do hope that it turns out well since plenty of people are looking forward to it and it would be a monumental achievement for such a small dev team.

I am personally not likely to end up buying this as it doesn't really scratch the itch I've had for space exploration/trade/pvp, so for now I am most likely just going to be sticking towards games like Elite Dangerous. A major turn off for me at any rate was like the user @"All in One" said it seems (to me) that the worlds are mostly just colour palette swaps with slightly different animals and flora.

Very well said. To my knowledge you can play against bots in Overwatch (under Training @ Main Menu), and custom games are full of settings like health modifier, what heroes are allowed, cooldown modifier, damage modifier, etc.

My opinion with both games more or less is: Yes, they cast a wide net, but depth wise are pretty shallow. There really isn't anything wrong with that, it just means out of the door they aren't the most spectacular. I think both games have fantastic bases, and Blizzard has shown they're willing to work and build the game up. Given it just launched I can't say the same about Hello Games & No Man's Sky. I look at No Man's Sky and I can't help but be reminded of Minecraft in its early days. It wasn't a polished gem, it was a wonderful base, but early on there wasn't much to do. Looking at the development of Minecraft and where it is now, I can only hope that we see something like that with No Man's Sky. I also think we may definitely see something like that with No Man's Sky, in the 4 (or was it 6) weeks after they went gold, they introduced "The Three Paths", which if anything sets the ground for something. It's my hope that they'll work from this fantastic base that they've created, and continue to add new content and build up from it.

I didn't even think about customization of ships and what not, though to be honest that doesn't really phase me. My concern with my ship would be that it gets me from place to place in an efficient and timely manner. I can completely see where you're coming from though, I take pride into my character customization in FFXIV, Skyrim and really any RPG. I hope they bring customization to ships to the game.

Definitely has the potential to do that, and I'm already reading about people who bought into the hype and are flat out disappointed. But, to me at least, if it ended up anything like solo Minecraft I'm going to have a blast. I can't count how many hours I've spent playing solo Minecraft exploring cave systems, and building random things. Now it doesn't hold nearly as much of a charm because I finally have a PC that can handle modded Minecraft, but I still typically play that solo. Either way, I really look forward to what Hello Games does with the game, and where it goes from here on out.

Preordered it on pc. I'm gonna nut so bad when it comes out on the 12th. Prob gonna pull an all nighter.

Gonna preorder it now. Doubt I'll pull an all nighter though.

Would have given it a positive review for a fast refund, but Steam won't re-add the money to my wallet until tomorrow.  0/10.

From what I've heard, it's pmuch a 50/50 chance: Either it runs decent like yours, or it's Arkham Knight levels of terribad.

Yup. Which is really fucking sad. This launch is an absurd mess, but given their recent tweet they've been up all night working to resolve the issue with poor performance on CPUs. Still really shitty that the launch even was this horrible of a mess.

Just glad I was able to resolve my minor issues and play the game.

Guess they shouldn't have rushed it out the door.

Definitely needed to be delayed, but I'd imagine Sony was putting pressure on it getting out the door. I look forward to seeing what updates they push out in the next couple months.
