First game you ever played?

Posts

The title of the thread says it all: What's the first vidya gaem you can recall playing?

For me it'd have to be a top-down rougelike that came bundled with my first cellphone; a Nokia dumbphone I got around 2001. The graphics were incredibly primitive owing to its LCD display, but quite detailed for the technology involved. The sound was even moreso: The default beep every time you pressed a button, and a delightful MIDI sonata when you died.

Also, in true rougelike fashion, there were many creative (and oftentimes hilarious) ways to die. I mean, for starters, you could whittle down your health by trying to eat a flaming torch...

All in all, it was a really fun time. I can't say the concept was anything novel, but to bring a roguelike to a cellphone was a genuine technical feat back in the day. Whoever pulled it off, I genuinely hope they got a good raise.

Namco Museum Vol 1 was the first video game I ever played and I know that for a fact since it was the first game for my family's PS2. It's a collection of classic Namco arcade games inter-spaced between a 3D environment that you navigated around in in first person. Where the "Museum" name came in was that each game on the volume had its own wing with a bunch of assorted fun facts and trivia about the game. At the end of each wing would be a special room heavily themed on the game, like for Galaga the game room is the bridge of a space ship or a race track in the case of Rally-X. As a kid I spent much more time just milling around in the museum than in the actual games. The early PS1 graphics coupled with an ambient track that looped over and over again created a truly surreal experience especially since I couldn't have been older than four when I first played it. My older sister would always complain that the game gave her strange dreams.

I have much more fond memories with the second game I ever played, Pac Man World 2, which I believe is what is responsible for making vidya my lifelong hobby but Namco Museum still holds a special place in my heart alongside everything else that defined the earliest part of my childhood.

Shit, I dunno. The N64 was still the hot thing when I was born so probably Mario 64. Although I know my dad had a PS1 so it could be anything really.

I had one of those little joysticks you get at the toy stores that you plug into the TV that comes pre-loaded with games like Pac-Man and Dig-Dug.

doom. i can't recall the console or anything like that, but i have very fond memories of passing the controller back and forth with my dad. the first time i remember playing a game of my own volition was half life. the tram sequence terrified the everloving fuck out of me and i pussied out.

GTA Vice City on the first computer that my mom bought from Spain, I miss those days spending time doing crazy stunts and killing people just for fun.

Crash TAG Team Racing on PSP and also Lemmings.
On PC it was Crazy Taxi and Starky & Hutch.

I don't know which specifically, but it is from this pool of games:

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow - leaning towards Yellow
-- or --
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-- or --
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
