Hah, same. I mean, the Note 9 is a great handset, don't get me wrong, but I'd love to run LineageOS on this thing.

Looking at XDA, there do seem to be LineageOS builds, at least for the Exynos version. Apparently messing with the recovery breaks knox, though I have no idea what that is.

Probably some Samsung OEM app. Sadly though, they made they made the decision to sell the Snapdragon version for all US handsets. I can only assume someone in the state surveillance apparatus cut them a hefty check. >>'

Isn't that because Quallcom has some patent on CDMA modems in the US? Or something like that anyway. And yeah, that model unforunately is quite lacking in the custom development area :/ At least it's not as fragmented as my LG V20 ^_^'

It's one of Samsung's security things which is also enables the use of certain features like Samsung Pay and Secure Folder.

If it's proprietary, then it ain't secure~

One thing I'm rather disappointed with lately is the lack of tablets with the magical combo of good specs, a cheap price, and an unlockable recovery [ which lets you install ROMs ]. I was actually hoping to allot some cash on getting a Galaxy Tab A for browsing Lewd while on-hours, and all of my research - even the r/android posts - kept veering me towards an iPad. Yech. >_<"

That said~, I actually already have a tablet, if a rather terrible one. After a day of searching, I found the old Dell Venue 10 5050 I got from my charity job at the computer workshop. Dell, in typical Dell fashion, summarily terminated service of them years in advance of when they'd promised, so I suppose the firm that'd donated them figured it was easier to wash their hands of the devices and start from scratch. >.>'

It's a rather sleek looking device, for a cheap tablet. Its letdown is its paltry internal storage, which I'd check, but then its battery is so weak now, that it takes ages to charge and dies within the span of a day if you're not connected to mains. For what's suppose to be, like, equivalent to the "PADD"s from Star Trek, that's pretty terrible IMO.

Still~, at least it gets the basics right. Most apps still work, despite it running an older version of Android, and Firefox was just as snappy as it was on my Note 9. I currently have some plans to dust off my old e-reader, but this thing might still be useful after all. ^_^

I got a Tab S5e for my at work anime time. The specs are just alright, no flagship processor or anything, but I did get the model with 6GB of RAM. The AMOLED screen is absolutely stunning for videos too! Looks like you can root them and there are official builds of Lineage for it. I just hate that it doesn't have a headphone jack. I had to buy an Apple dongle dac for a device whose entire purpose is media consumption! It also chokes in H265 videos, but so does my Note 9.

If you want to talk ereaders, I can go all day. I frickin love my Kindles for books and manga. I got lucky and only paid $80 for the Oasis. Annoying locked down software and format conversions aside, it's literally perfect for reading. I won't even care if I could just drag and drop epubs and cbz files.

I've been using exclusively Android for years, lot's of ROMs as well, they can easily give one or two more years to a phone. Last two phones were entry level Xiaomi, current one I splurged and went for a midrange Xiaomi hoping that it would provide better user experience. Well, that and there's basically no viable cheap phones in small sizes, figured I should try the hyped phones instead. OS is MIUI, I usually use with KISS launcher but last week an update broke all 3rd party launchers, updates are relatively often but not as often as other brands and it always relates to mundane shit I don't care about like Theme app until it breaks something I use... ROMs usually take quite some time to come out and get stable, so that's a no.
I'm thinking next phone should be something like OnePlus (their Nord is relatively cheap) which is basically just stock Android, updates regularly, has fairly long support and hopefully stays out my way, or might try an iPhone. I'd like a 1 month test period before buying lol. Thing I'm most concerned about is all the Android apps I use that don't have alternatives (F-Droid, Tachiyomi, KISS, KurobaEx and Newpipe to list a few that I use daily).

Ereaders are really nice, for having owned and used a few. I love that it has long battery life and you can just read in bed without hurting your eyes or staying awake for 1h after your reading session. That and you can sideload any book you want, that's a library in your pocket, how awesome is that?
I'll probably upgrade in 2 or 3 years for something with warm light, and then color eink would be more affordable as well as more polished.
Re: locked down software and format conversion, true. I use Calibre to deal with conversions, and DeDRM for the few books I bought from Amazon (needs an old KindleForPC version, I use 1.17 something because it was the easiest one to find). Kobo can flash Koreader and Koreader is really nice.

I liked the OnePlus I had, it's extremely friendly when it comes to rooting. The stock OS even recognized that had rooted it and made taking OTA updates easier so nothing broke. Their gesture navigation is also fantastic, at least compared to the shit show that Google put out and is easier to use one handed compared to Samsung's.

How is KurobaEX? I've been running my own version of Kuroba I "forked" when the dev ruined the theme system. Did the sites outside of 4chan ever get updated? I had to add /otaku/ to sushichan, but I never got around to fixing posting on there.

I'll probably hold onto my Oasis until the black and white eink hits it's peak or the color stuff isn't a step back from what we have now. Aside from covers and the occasional set of color pages in manga, I really don't have a use for color. I started using azw3 instead of mobi for books too, it unlocks a few more options compared to mobi.

That's good to know, if it stays out of your way then it's all I need.

Some sites are still missing (thinking of smuglo.li for example) but you have 4chan, 8kun, Lainchan and Sushichan, plus some others so it's fine for me. You can't browse the archives (you can still use them to view archived thread) yet at least. It's very usable, new theme engine has been implemented so if you want a custom theme (or other than default) you need to import it, there are some on the github, maybe in an issue. Bookmarks function better imo. I found it less buggy than Kuroba but that's subjective and just a feeling.

I'll keep my Oasis as well, it's a really neat little device. Regarding peak black and white eink, I'm not sure much progress is made there. New devices have more layers than older ones, and with eink being the same we're losing contrast, so more features but we're maybe regressing on the fundamentals.I saw on 4chan that TCL is also developping a competing technology called NTXPaper, it seems more focused on color though I'll check out how deep are the blacks and how muc contrast it has when it comes out later this year. Either, some competition should foster innovation.

Hmm, talking of ereaders and phones, I'm kinda liking the look of the Hisense A7 CC. Only issue is the unrootable Chinese firmware.

Interesting, maybe I'll give it a test run and see if I like it. Smuglo.li runs on vichan, so I might be able to get that working by looking at other sites like lain and sushi.

The thing that worries me about an eink phone is the response time of the screen. It's not an issue for paging through things like on an ereader, but Android has tons of scrolling that is just unavoidable. From what I've seen with Hisense's older eink phones they used scrolling menus in their own apps.

Yeah, this surprised me as well. I'd have thought that they would minimise the amount of scrolling in the OS, but I guess they didn't want to put that much effort in. I don't think it's too bad though at the faster display modes.

For what it's worth you also have scrolling on Android based e-readers, there are different modes that help achieve good response time and you can check it out on youtube by watching Onyx Boox reviews. What they have are different modes according to what you're doing, but you have to switch manually. Normal mode, good for reading text, the slowest but still fast enough just can't flip a manga like you would on a phone, A2, faster and more ghosting, turns almost immediately and it's prett smooth, X mode, even faster and even more ghosting, scrolls and flips pages like it's nothing. Most of the OS stuff is paged though.

I guess checking reviews of the phone might tell you more, if they exist.
