Do you believe in god?

I found this site the other day and it's just the kind of thing I've wanted to see forever. As an atheist, I find the anti-Christian pseudo-history that so many of them (even including some pop scientists and historians) spout embarrassing as a history major. This is a great blog with posts refuting the "lol Christianz burnt down the library of Alexandria and created the dark ages xD" tripe that too many people still recite as gospel (lol).

True. Some people don't get the contribution of Christianism.
I don't like pop-"scientist" like Dawkins with prepotencious arguments, but of course is not like christianity is a super good thing every time. XD

I don't think I can believe in God. In some ways I think it's far too convenient. Believe in and offer prayer to a giant omnipotent deity and be a good person, and you can have a good life.
Don't be a good person or believe, you burn forever in eternal damnation. Okay.

Plus I think this world is far too cruel and unjustified to warrant the existence of a large overseer. If God does actually exist, I think it is just toying with us.

I believe in God for sure. Honestly it seems to be so deeply rooted in me that even in times of despair that never really quite diaapeared. And for the above user, you don't have to be a good person to be saved. You just need to believe that he will save you. The reason why it's so easy is because God did all the work for us.

Now despite this looking like an arguement, please don't continue it / start one. Arguments about religion rarely have both sides calm. I'd like to avoid any arguements to be perfectly honest.

I must believe in two things. That there is existence, and I have the capacity for experience, aka "consciousness".
My experiences however are not controlled consciously. I cannot imagine a cat in front of me, and experience all the sensations of a cat being there.
My mind feeds me experiences, presumably based on an external information that I interact with. I cannot prove such information exists independent of me however. I also cannot prove my mind's representation of any the apparently external information is accurate. Schizophrenia is great real world example of this. All I know is my mind is feeding me experiences, and I have no control over them.

I believe "God" is mind, and consciousness is the fundamental substance through which reality exists. Our conscious experience is one of infinite possible conscious states. All conscious states, of all scales and magnitudes exist equally, as a part of a greater unified consciousness, "God". Such a consciousness transcends space and time. The past is equally as "real" as the future, as both are possible conscious states according to their respective natural laws. The collection of all conscious states, of all times, all universes, all realities is what I would consider "God". It is not a being, it is all beings, all things, all that is possible.

For such a thing to exist, it must be infinite. If it was finite, then it could be added to. It must be whole. If you could subtract or divide it, then it would not be all of existence. Nothing can influence it, internally or externally, and it must be static. If "God" had desires or emotions, then it must change state, but a change from one state to another means you have multiple distinct states, and it would no longer be all that exists. If "God" was influenced externally, then there must be something that exists independent of all that exists, which is a contradiction. "God" must be static and unchanging, hence why the past, present and future all exist on equal footing. They are all examples of the infinite conscious realities that exist within the single, supreme consciousness.

Consciousness for me is the unified whole, "God", experiencing itself. Perhaps I can influence the path I take through the infinite web of conscious states, or maybe my path is set. All I can do is try, and I believe by seeing the world in such a way I am better equipped to confront any challenges that face me in this life.

I do believe in a god but not the abrahamic god nor any other one. I don't believe in god as a creator or a father archetype akin to the emperor of the tarot or something like that. I feel like god is something so abstract and incomprehensible that as soon as you begin to visualize them or describe them, it's no longer god.

tomadoi So do you think god would be something more... inherent to the universe in general then, rather than a single entity/deity? I just had the thought, what if the laws of physics themselves are effectively "god"?

malmon The universe has the flaw of being only physical. The way I see it a true god can be everywhere and be everything and encompass all of infinity, not bound by physicality or really anything else. But it IS veeeery similar to what you're saying. I don't know.
I feel like I'll always struggle to explain this but most people think of an specific archetype when they think of god.
Some people think of some sort of stern father or of a protective mother. Some other people think of some sort of wise old man. The way I see it a true god goes beyond all of that. It's all of those at once and also none. S-sorry I communicate very awkwardly (;´Д`)

Hmm, perhaps more like an aether of sorts then? I think the main issue is with using the word "god" to describe what your thoughts are. "God" is much more of a physical concept, so it's natural that one might tend to describe them as a parent, or ruler of some sort.

You sound fine to me~ I think the concept you're trying to explain is just difficult to explain, as you say. Perhaps reading more philosophy or something would help formalise your ideas.
