Not gonna lie, I only really use them for Picross and Fire Emblem. The Switch sucks for Picross and FE:Three Houses feels like a massive departure from the previous games. Having Disgaea 5 on a portable is nice, I guess. The 3DS was just so much more interesting with how much you could customize it, all the unique games, and it played DS carts and GBA roms natively.

I uh.... I somehow managed to get an order in for an RTX 3080, so I guess I'll be selling this card.

bruh, how rich are you ^_^'

I had money packed away for entertainment purposes haha. Plus it was discounted for some reason so it was pretty close to MSRP.

How is it discounted if it's close to MSRP!!

That's true LOL

Anyways I just got an e-mail that it was backordered, so I guess I'll just keep this open unless I manage to snag one during a stock drop on one of the websites or get an e-mail from EVGA via their queue system.

I forgot to update this. The Dell order was delayed, so I cancelled it. I actually got super lucky and managed to snag a 3080 Xtreme from Gigabyte.

Wow, over a month and nothing from EVGA? My 1070's fan bearings are starting to go, I might just order a Kraken G12 and watercool it at this point.

Congrats on the new GPU!

Welp~, the results don't lie. This thing is a goddamn monster. xD

I was already a fan of Arctic products, so I had enough 140-mil fans to do a push-pull setup with the same kinda fans that come with it stock. As a result, I've yet to see temps reach go past 72 degrees, whether you're running Cinebench, Folding@Home, or a combined bench in 3DMark. It's that good at dissipating heat. And with none of the awful pump whine of a front mount, either!

Y'know, I was joking before, but you really could use this thing as a small space heater... I just might, as the days get colder.

Heheh, you joke, but my 3DS was honestly one of the best purchases I made back in high school. I can't say I remember much from that time, mostly due to the extreme migraines I'd have, but I do recall having tons of fun playing Fire Emblem: Awakening [ the game I bought the system for ], and 999, one of my first visual novels. The only shortcomings were its resolution, and the complete waste of time that was its "3D" gimmick. Luckily, emulation can solve pretty much everything these days.

Ooof, already? That's rough, love. I'm sorry to hear. Which AIB made your 1070? >_<'

The "New" models made the 3D usable! It's sad though, by the time they came to market everyone had already given up on the 3D and only the early titles look decent with it on. But yeah, with your migraines I won't suggest trying it for any length of time past demoing it. It starts to hurt my head after a while.

EVGA, funnily enough. But I've always had bad luck with fans. My MSI GTX 660Ti had even worse bearing wear, I've had two case fans eat the dust over the past five or six years, and now my 1070Ti. I did manage to get access to the fan hub and added a drop of gun oil (not the best thing, but it was that or motor oil) to it, that helped a bit. Now I'm running the card at 75% power target with a custom fan curve to keep it from being too annoying.
For a final solution I could go with the Kraken adapter and an AIO watercooler or just zip tie some 120mm case fans on there. As much as I want to get a Big Navi card, the 1070Ti handles everything I do.

a month later

I got the Kraken kit and a 240mm ASUS AIO! Other than making the card a bit clunky to reinstall and having to dremel off some tabs on the card's heat spreader, the install went smoothly. Most importantly, it is dead silent. I loaded up Hell Let Loose, a game that used to take the card into the 90s, and it just sits there all happy and cool, never breaking 60C. I am very impressed at what an adapter kit and $100 AIO can do.

Dremeling pieces of your PC hardware? Hoh! Shucks love, I'm impressed myself! I decided to never even attempt custom watercooling 'cuz of the potential for leakage [and the expense~]. The thought of putting a power tool anywhere near my hardware is unthinkable, but it sounds like everything worked well in the end. ^~^

60C is an amazing temp for a GPU under full load. I'd love to know what kinda card it is, and if you had any benchmarks to share!

As for me, just yesterday I actually got my hands on a piece of server equipment from way back when. Specifically, a Dell H310 SAS controller!

You know something's professional when it uses a green PCB, right~? Well, that or old.

Actually, about that protocol. I'd never heard of it before, but SAS was apparently an alternative to SATA that saw extensive use in the professional sector for its integrated support for RAID when connected to a backplane.

Going off a comment left by a retired sysadmin on Reddit, those kinds 'a setups were used extensively with 2.5" drives since they were faster to spin up and read. [ That's important to traders, it seems. ] Of course, when SSDs finally came, they blew mechanical drives outta the water, such that the guy I bought these from had, just, thousands of these lying around when he started selling them. Heh~, I won't complain.

The dremeling was easy once I figured out why the cold plate wasn't making contact with the chip. Basically the heat spreader screws on all over the card, including 4 that extend in towards the GPU die area. Those were hitting the cold plate of the AIO, so instead of scrapping the whole heat spreader, I just removed it, sliced the stubs off, and screwed it back on. I'm sure it doesn't make a big difference now that the power delivery system and memory is getting nice, cool air blown on it instead of air that has been molested by the GPU's heatsinks. It's just a basic EVGA 1070 Ti underneath, the SC Black edition. The wetness is staining from the oil in the thermal pads, I couldn't easily remove it. If you have any recommendations for benchmarks, I'll run them.

Some of the flash based storage server stuff is crazy. I was talking to someone who bought some of it recently. It's basically like RAM in that the "drives" are all just flash storage chips and that's it. You plop them in like drives and the controllers are in the chassis. I do see a lot of 2.5" SAS 250GB drives at work though.

Yeah, I got a Kraken kit for my 290X as well. Almost felt like I got a new GPU in some ways. No more throttling!

How come you went for this one and not an LSI?

Eeeetou~... Mostly because I'm new to secondhand server hardware, saw a recommendation for these things on Reddit, and when I learned there's a guy who sold 100+ of these on eBay and had just under a half dozen left~, I snapped it right up... >~<'

But, you know, that's okay! While I might not get access to the advanced features of an LSI RAID card, it does do the job of hooking up additional hard drives, which will be great for a software data management scheme like unRAID's. I'll be trying that soon... ^~^

Nice setup; how difficult is it to keep track of where the mouse is?

And, more importantly, how did you get this set up stable?
