Tabletop RPGs!

Posts

Anyone else here play tabletop RPGs? I've gotten big into them since a house fire destroyed my gaming PC. Granted, I'm playing solo, but rolling some dice and running adventures is miles ahead of mindlessly playing OpenTTD all night.

The first system I tried to learn was GURPS, which was incredibly crunchy and not worth the effort IMO. Afterwards, I picked up a lovely lightweight system called Everywhen - a genericized version of the popular sword and sorcery RPG, Barbarians of Lemuria - before settling on Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. I'm currently running a campaign similar to Sword Art Online, wherein all my PCs are trapped in an animesque fantasy MMORPG.

One thing I will say is that TTRPGs require a lot more time invested than video games. I mean, I read sourcebooks at work, and I still take weeks to learn a new system. Some people do it much quicker however, so perhaps I'm just a slow reader.

Reading the Flying Circus corebook has me more excited for an RPG than I've been in months. What a novel concept, executed masterfully.

To copy what I said to my friends? It's essentially a very Ghibli-esque fantasy world where humans have flown before even inventing the wheel, and the airplane is the dominant form of travel. Long ago, two large empires got into a massive war, mutually annihilated each other, and brought ruin to the world. Only in recent years, have isolated rural communities began to pick up the pieces.

You play a brave mercenary pilot! After picking from one of ten fleshed-out backgrounds, your character is free to explore ruins, upgrade your plane, pick up contracts, smuggle and conduct trade, and do whatever else you might expect of a knight of the sky. If you're really successful, you might even amass your own mercenary squadron! Perhaps, someday. ^^

The only downside? I can't read the book at work, due to the lewd nose art sprinkled throughout the margins. I mean, it's thematically-authentic, but still. xD

Translation: Reporting for Duty!

I used to be super into GURPS. I would spend more time reading the expansion books and SJG articles than actually playing ^^.
However at some point I lost interest and sold all my core books and deleted my pdf collection.

Backlash That's super cool! I've never heard of an airplane focused TTRPG that wasn't a war game. How did you find this?

Been working on some concepts for a hack for Savage Worlds. In particular, I'd like to expand the generic rules considerably, while still maintaining the spirit of the original design philosophy; and I'd like to link together the game's various Setting Books, such that one can take a character from one setting and theoretically convert them to another. Much like you can take GURPS characters from one place to another, only much more "cinematic" and rules-lite.

I'm still hashing out the details. But for now, I've got a name. I'll call it: Infinite Worlds Online.
