Roguelike love!

Hey, I just wanted to make a thread about roguelike games. Recommend, talk about your favorites, about the ones we should avoid, et cetera! Just discuss roguelike games in general I guess :p

The roguelike I would most recommend right now (and probably one of the most fun games I've ever played) is Nuclear Throne. Don't be spooked by the early access, they add content every single week. It's not going on sale anytime soon, but it's worth $20. It's slowly climbing up my most played games. It's incredibly difficult, though, so keep that in mind.

One Way Heroics is a charming little tile-based roguelike that's cheap as dirt. Maybe wait for a sale, it can go as low as 80% off, and it's pretty fun.

Nuclear Throne looks seriously intense in the video on the Steam page.

I also should mention that I'm terrible when it comes to very difficult games, in the sense that I don't last long and rage quit real fast.
If the game does go on sale, I will certainly pick it up! I don't mind a good challenge here and there, though I just don't know how well that's going to end for me or the PC...

As for One Way Heroics, that seems to be more my kind of game, I'm a filthy casual when it comes to games , another one to add to my wishlist~ :3

Thank you for the recommendations too! I'll be sure to give you my feedback after getting and playing them!

One Way Heroics is definitely a recommended game from me, as well. I think it's a great way for the more casual players to get into the genre.

One game worth mentioning that I don't see much of is a zombie roguelike still in active development called Cataclysm: DDA. The sheer amount of community input, as well as the constant updates being rolled out every few months just shows how dedicated the userbase and devs are to the game. There's -so- much to do in that game, I can't even list the gist of it. The only negative things I could say about it would be that the amount bloat code in the game itself is pretty awful, and the true retro graphics might be a turn off for people just starting the genre. On the flip side, it's all open source, there's a ton of mods for it, and the retro graphics can be easily updates with a tileset mod.

One way heroics is defintely worth the price, as is FTL: Faster Than Light, Risk of Rain, and You Have To Win The Game (f2p, beat that).

With this thread revived, I'd like to point out that I recently got a game called StoryMode from a bundle, and it's pretty fun. Talking with the dev right now.

Ahh, alright. I'll give all of them a look.

I've been wanting to get back into C😃DA, but I'm not sure if they fixed the bloat on saves.

Do Rouge-lites count? If so, I'll have to mention Renowned Explorers: International Society by Abbey Games. The premise is appropriately simple: You control a team of unique characters who've just joined the guild of Renowned Explorers, and vie to collect treasure to become the most Renowned Explorer in the world.

The game isn't particularly deep, but the unique mechanics and masterful aesthetic design simply make it a joy to play. As well, the simple mechanics fit well with one another, adding up to something that's bigger than the sum of its parts. One rather innovative aspect is the "mood" system: Any actions you take during a combat scenario can be Friendly (Flattering them.), Devious (Insulting their mothers.), or Aggressive (Zapping them with your handy-dandy Tesla Coil.) These three Moods are set in a Rock-Paper-Scissors arrangement, so you're constantly attempting to ensure you've got either parity, or an advantage against your opponents.

The visuals are amazing, with high-res sprites and fluid two-dimensional animations. Combined with the quasi-Victorian aesthetic, immersive procedurally-generated music, and the fact that no one dies (even if they get shot in the face); it pretty much amounts to the perfect game for anyone seeking an adventure. The price is kinda steep, but I'd totally pick it up whenever it comes on sale.
