People who watch anime, identify as a furry, cosplay as "x" character or anything else considered socially "cringe-worthy" are not all horrible or socially awkward people. It's usually the bad apples that the public takes note of and refuses to associate anyone else in that community as anything but that one bad example.
There are celebrities who watch anime. The general public may not even care about it.
There's also these types of people. They attract ridicule because, what, it makes people feel better about themselves that they're "not them"?
If they're the types to continually force their beliefs and likes on to you, then yes, you should definitely stay away from them. If they mention off-hand, "oh, I just watched x", that doesn't mean you should stay away from them. This is true for all people, not just people who like anime.
That said, I sometimes wonder how different I'd be without being introduced to anime in the first place.
So does you

True :') I always say that, like if there are criminals in united states, I wouldn't say all united states is shit but there are some people in it are shit, same thing goes for anime, anime is amazing while some of their fans really suck however there are many good anime fans too
not to mention anime is really good, I was kinda lost in my life for various reasons and big impacts happened to me in my life and anime helped a lot, to who says anime for nonsocial people, they can shut up seriously, I'm known for being very social guy, and have a lot of friends, so I hang with them a lot, There are type of anime fans, like not everyone is otaku or weeaboo, there is normal anime fans, that guy is pretty close minded and full of ignorance to say anime was mistake for it's bad side effects, while everything in the world have it's bad side effects, I have learned a lot from anime and light novels, they wouldn't possibility understand if they doesn't watch/read it
I didn't start watching anime until my senior year in high school. Before that, I hated it.. a lot! From what I can tell you growing up a nerd without anime, those sorts of people will just find other outlets.... The internet is what truly invented cringe.... allowing those sorts to congregate had no positive outcome.
