Which anime would you show to someone who has never watched anime before

I'd show them one piece because one of these two things will happen:
1: They'll end up really liking it but they'll never get to the end of it so they'll be stuck there until they grow out of it and never watch anime again.
2: they don't like it and they won't watch any anime again.

Code Geass, I always recommend people that anime.

None. Nobody deserves to deal with this shit.
...Okay, maybe some Ghibli/Satoshi Kon. And if they're openminded/have a a good sense of humor, Kodocha. But, yeah. That's pretty much it.

Uhm how about we start them off slow, something like a movie? Anime isn't exactly the type of thing you just wanna
shove in peoples faces all of a sudden...

I usually ask them what they like.
Most of the time I end up recommending FMA: Brotherhood. Can't really go wrong there.
But if they are more of the romance type, why not clannad?
