The HDD is actually on a Samba share on a Linux server. It's just formatted as NTFS for some reason - I can't remember why.

I disagree with that one. Mainly because I think whoever translated that quote got the meanings of "live" and "survive" swapped around.

I can't find a single translation that says it any other way.

And it's not swapped at all, it's saying that life is hard. No one has an easy life. Simply existing is life.
To Survive however is to find a reason to continue living. To fight the hardships and work towards the meaning you have found, whatever its form.
