Abyssal Fleet Event 3

Posts

>Ise and Fusou shared their last words together before sinking, leaving Yamato, Nagato, and the admiral to fend off.

Ise: "One day, those responsible for sinking me like this will share the same fate as us." Ise is lost
Fusou: "I long for a victory as glorious as we did in Pearl.. once again." Fusou is lost

>Nagato, angered at the simultaneous loss of two ships, meaning the Lucians are at a disadvantage, but not for long.
>Yamato, now on fire, must put it out fast; she still has many cannons that were undamaged.

Nagato: "I'm unfazed at this... such annoyance."
Yamato: "Fire ALL guns! Do our best to preserve our hulls! Yamato must not sink this day!"

>The admiral gets in front and fires her big and small guns one after the other in rapid succession, whereas Yamato fires all her guns at once in a tight spread over a high arc and Nagato with her slow, but steady stream of cannon fire to lead her target.

Nagato: "Admiral, sit-rep!"
Houki: "Lucia must've sent us reinforcements hours ago, but they all decided not to sail with us due to a storm bearing down on Tokyo."
Nagato: "Then we must remain vigilant, stay calm but tense, and make every shell and evasive manuever count."

>Yamato dealt fatal damage on Nunavut mercilessly.
>Nagato dealt fatal damage on Shoshone by hitting its weak points, and cutting off all engines.
>Houki dealt 40 points with her cannons on Lakotah, then finished her off with her dual melee crimson katanas by slashing her bulkhead in half for another 50 points, causing Lakotah's stern to lean toward the sea.

>The Lucians have a slight advantage, with only the Thunderer and New Jersey remaining. Usually, battleship duels like this don't last long.
>Yamato almost got the fire out herself, but she is still taking minor damage for 4 points.
>All three IJN ships are now in range of the remaining two battleships that are still at full health.

HIJMS Himawari - Battleship - 150/150
HIJMS Yamato - Battleship - 95/140
HIJMS Nagato - Battleship - 112/135
HIJMS Fusou - Battleship - K.O.
HIJMS Ise - Battleship - K.O.

Mission Failed: You didn't eliminate all enemy ships within the time limit! This battle is declared unresolved, and Midway remaining in Abyssal territory.

I may have lost this battle not by how many ships I lost, but by the sands of time running out. Next time, you won't be so lucky. I'm bringing back my 17th Imperial fleet to Tokyo, and have it all prepped up at full strength for the main event tomorrow.

@[deleted] I think I found an artwork of one of our previous engagements! Well, from your perspective anyways. ^^'

Those Shindens and Kikkas were lucky you had the element of surprise. They might not fare so well next time. ;3

Pre-battle scene of Pearl Harbor (7/30/2017) via IJN's perspective just to give @[deleted] a few hours heads-up.

Several hours have passed, and the 'Operation 69' force, a.k.a. the 17th Imperial KanMusu fleet in the dead of night still hadn't found O'ahu yet, as they sailed southeast from Tokyo amid the cloudy skies. Yamato is starting to get a little concerned they're low on fuel and have to slow down to conserve it.
Admiral Houki didn't pay much attention about the resources debate back in Tokyo the other day, her goal is to make sure everything goes as planned and operational.
Nagato then speaks over to the Admiral via the comm.

Nagato: "How far are we into our target position, Admiral?"
Houki: "100 nautical kilometers, we're bearing one-eight-zero, no sight of land, wind speed at 17 knots!"
Nagato: "We should be there soon. The sun is not up until around 06:00."

Yamato peers around, but no sign of any enemy patrol lurking in the Hawaiian Archipelego.

Yamato: "Radar scan reports nothing on our visual, everything is fine."
Nagato: "Good, saves us all the ammo we need in case everything fails. We will stay out of their radar range once we see the island."
Yamato: "Which one we're looking for again, Secretary?"
Nagato: "The second big one, the one dead ahead of us. Once we see it, we'll stop and commence."
Akagi: "Our plans as Carrier Division One, Nagato?"

Nagato takes out an old map of Hawai'i, it looks kind of torn up but still readable.

Nagato: "Once Tenryuu gives our attack signal, you straight away order your first wave to cripple as much of what their planes can see on sight before they notice we're here. Your first wave must destroy every single stationary enemy plane before they have a chance to take off, as well as destroy their key installations. Then, once they start to notice and sound their alarm, order your first wave to pull back and let your second wave in to destroy as much of the enemy fleet stationed there. We want at least 75% of them damaged or gone to buy us time."
Akagi: "And if somehow our planes get shot down a lot?"
Nagato: "You reel back your attack waves and put them on combat air patrol."
Yamato: "And what about the rest of us, Secretary?"
Nagato: "All of us will stay put, we let our carriers' planes do the work, and if all else fail, we will be prepared to fall back if necessary."
Yamato: "Aye, ma'am!"

So it's come to this, eh? Bring it. ;3

I'm actually gonna be doing some long-overdue spring cleaning, but I'll try to reply throughout the day. Also! I've taken the liberty of creating a list of special equipment you might encounter throughout the campaign. It's in my intro post if you wanna take a look. ^^

At this point, the sortie is closed, so no more shipgirls for now. 🙁

>The 17th Imperial KanMusu fleet is close enough they can see O’ahu, about 30 nautical kilometers from the shore.

Houki: “We see it, team! All ships stop your engines and hold position!”
Yamato: “Carriers, prepare your flight decks! We must launch at the first rays of light!”
Akagi: “Bows ready and aiming, ma’am!”
Nagato: “All right, Tenryuu, give our carriers the signal.”
Tenryuu: “You got it! It is time to make our presence known. This… is… war. TORA, TORA, TORA!”

>Akagi and 13 other carriers launch the first wave of planes, consisting of 168 aircraft: 56 Zeroes, 56 Vals, and 56 Kates bearing down on Pearl Harbor at a high altitude over the clouds going at over 200 km/h.
>With the sun just at the horizon, the time of day already hit 06:00 and the inhabitants of the island wake up and are stunned at the sight of the planes, easily mistaken them for American aircraft. They go about their business, ignoring their presence.
>By the time the planes get to see Pearl Harbor, the orders are given to the pilots by the Admiral:

Houki: “All first wave planes start your attack runs! Zeroes, you must destroy the stationary planes, any small boats you encounter, and encircle the harbor. Vals, commence your bombing runs on the radar station, the comms tower, the airfield, and the shipyard. Kates, focus your efforts on the big ships first, the more you hit in one go, the better!”
Nagato: “Do not allow the Abyssals to notice too much, or they’ll raise the alarm.”
A6M Zero Squadron #202: “Understood, we are commencing the surprise attack.”
A6M Zero Squadron #137: “BANZAI!”

~The Abyssal Fleet Event has officially begun!~

Terribly sorry for being late! I actually got roped by my mom into cleaning the entire garage, so it was incredibly difficult to focus.

I tried out like, five different starter posts before this one and none of 'em stuck. I do hope you'll find this one acceptable though. :3

~***~

Among the dozens of vessels performing their morning maneuvers in the great bay, one in particular might've stood out to an astute pilot. A petite young destroyer - Fletcher class - clad in a bright blue dress and trailing long locks the color of bubblegum. It was none other than the North American destroyer Conway, or "Connie" for short.
As Conway left the dock and picked up speed, she helped herself to a deep swig of the heady tropical air. Two months ago she might've been fast asleep in the dock, but that ship had sailed. She'd made a promise to her fellow destroyer, and if it meant seeing the smile on Jenkins' face, she was willing to endure early mornings and more.

Life had been good here at Pearl. Sure, Jennie and her fleet were still stationed somewhere near Midway, but in her stead, Conway had spent a good amount of time getting to know her fellow fleet girls, and even garnered a few acquaintances among their new allies, the Abyssals.
They were a strange lot, these ships. For starters, they often slept upright; back straight, legs bobbing in the waves, but with their heads slightly drooped and their eyes fallen shut. She hadn't had the gumption to ask why, but she reckoned it had to do with their unique origins as naturally-occurring Armadans.
She'd heard many stories about them during her fleet's brief stay in Japan. Yet despite those tales of "driving mankind from the sea" and "contaminating everything they touched", the Abyssals she'd met seemed perfectly cordial by her mark. Oh, they were terrifying to look at, certainly some of them; and a select few brandished monstrous appendages that could slice her to bits or crush her into scrap. But despite their myriad differences, they accepted the North Americans with open arms, providing comfortable quarters and full access to their naval academy. Chief Medusa was particularly interested in their shipyard, and could be spotted surveying the great gantries with Admiral Taylor in tow.

This was their home now. And for a brief moment that fateful morn, it seemed to Conway as if it'd last forever.

Her path took her past an Abyssal fleet oiler moored to a pier. Moments later, a burst of heat knocked the destroyer clean off her feet.

Conway: "Jesus Christ! Ach-... Fuck!"

Hacking, sputtering, cursing the whole way, she'd soon grabbed hold of some netting and hoisted herself upright. Noxious fumes burned her nose, and an errant shard of shrapnel had produced a large cut along the back of her leg.
With a tap of her outfit and a hint to her crew, she produced her five-inch gun and activated her sonar/radar suite.
And that's when she finally heard it. The unmistakable report of Japanese engines.
High above her, masked by the rising sun, a veritable armada of Lucian aircraft descended upon the harbor.

Conway: "Sweet mother of God..."

>As the harbor scrambles frantically to get to their stations to help the Abyssals, one of the many Kate squadrons torpedo the Conway before pulling back up. The Vals then bomb the radar station to dust, and the Zeroes start peppering their machineguns on the planes in the hangar, some American fighters and bombers are immediately reduced to scrap before the pilots even manage to get in. Some were even killed within its path.
>The other Zero squadrons then fire upon some PTs and cargo ships, thus limiting the number of threats posed on them, whilst the other Kates go on to torpedo a few ships, and they don't care which one to sink since they're all pressured for time.
>The Admiral and the carriers from out at sea begin to smile at their progress from afar, seeing all that smoke.

Houki: "Good work, Vals! We have their radar station down! That should give us more time!"
Val Squadron #92: "Things are going as planned, Admiral!"
Houki: "Now, focus on the comms tower!"
Val Squadron #92: "Acknowledged, Admiral!"
Houki: Kates, focus your efforts on the NAS battleships first, and then go after the rest!"
Kate Squadron #58: "Orders received and confirmed, Admiral! We're going for the big girls now!"

>Only Conway manage to detect the units, but she's hit by one Kate squadron, 20% of American fighters and 33% of American bombers are destroyed by Zeroes, the radar station is destroyed, half of American PTs and at least one tanker exploded.
>None of the 168 IJN aircraft is damaged. The time of day is at 06:20, and the alert meter is raised to 12.5%.

By then it'd become readily clear they were under attack, but without leadership the harbor soon fell into disarray. The Anchorage Princess Pearl was nowhere to be found, and the resident Air Defense Princess had just fled the gantry where she'd been undergoing a remodel. With the help of Medusa and Rear Admiral Taylor, she lifted herself out of the construction pit mere moments before a bomb turned her outfit to scrap.

Air Defense Princess Pearl: "Some of you humans are alright, you know that?"
Taylor: "Was that a compliment? D'awh, I'm flattered."

The very second after she spoke, Admiral Taylor picked up a disturbance in the corner of her vision. One of the enemy Zeroes was hurtling right for the three of them, kicking up tiny bits of concrete as its gunsight raced down the dock. Caught without cover, Rear Admiral Taylor dove out of the way. And when the Zero adjusted course, all she could do was curl up, cover her neck, and hope for the best.
Amazingly, she still seemed to have all her arms and legs attached when Medusa helped her up. A silent smile and small nod intimated her gratitude to the Abyssal who'd shielded her with her body.

ADP Pearl: "... Where to, Admiral?"
Taylor: "I've got an idea. Let's move!"

Meanwhile on the other side of the harbor, Conway was sinking fast. Feeling the water piling into her compartments and weighing down her left leg, she spotted a nearby beach and pushed her throttle to the limit. When she hit the sand, the entire world turned into a blur for a moment, till she found herself lodged against a nearby tree.
The first thing she realized was her right arm - it hurt like the dickens. Using her left hand, she found her shoulder warm to the touch, overflowing with her essences. Apparently that little stunt caused her some serious mechanical damage.
She'd little time to think, however. As another gigantic explosion took the life of a Battleship Princess, she resolved to shed her outfit and raise the alarm.
The pain was unreal as her heavy hull jostled the shattered struts within her arm. But with her outfit gone and her shoes kicked off, Conway was free to run to the nearest observation post and sound the alarm.
Lucians were beginning to take losses, but their attack remained fierce as ever. While Conway fumbled with the keypad in her off-hand, another unfortunate battleship went up in smoke.

Conway: "This is the NAS Conway to anyone on this line; designation, double-D five-oh-seven! Who's in command here? Please respond!"

No response. While she waited, an I-class destroyer let out the most horrible scream as a bomb turned it to scrap.
The young destroyer inhaled deeply. Then she pulled the general alarm.

Conway: "... Very well then, I am in command! All vessels and installations, we're under attack by enemy aircraft! The rising sun symbol has been sighted on their wings."

As the air raid sirens finally croaked to life, Conway's voice was interrupted by an explosion just a few yards away from the observation post.

Conway: "bsshiquarters, all hands! We need every available aircraft airborne immediately!"

Abyssal anti-aircraft guns shot down 28 Lucian aircraft, mostly attackers. However, they've lost many vessels, including three Ru-class battleships.
The alarm has been fully raised, and Allied forces are scrambling to mount a defense.

>As delighting as it sounds at first, unfortunately, Houki's radio detected some screams from some of Akagi's aircraft squadrons, suggesting a swift change of action.

A6M Zero Squadron #184: "I'm going in!" signal goes static
Val Squadron #92: "We're being chased!"
Houki: "Commence strafing, do whatever you can quickly to finish your tasks and get out of there!"
Val Squadron #92: "Admiral, no can do! Our Kates didn't fully sink the one who raised the alarm. We're going for the siren towers!"
Nagato: "What's just happened there, Admiral?"
Houki: "Somehow, they are too quick to notice. Unless we destroy that comm tower, our first wave is doomed to go down."
Akagi: "Should I order our engaged planes to decommission?"
Houki: "Not until that enemy comm tower is gone, then we'll safely order them back for our second wave, the heavy-hitters."
Akagi: "Standby."

>Back in Pearl Harbor, whatever's left of the American air force that isn't destroyed initially has the chance to takeoff and engage the 140 IJN planes still flying about, becoming an intense dogfight.
>The Vals are unhindered no matter what and go for the comm tower and the sirens, effectively pummeling them to rubble, silencing it for now.
>Meanwhile, the Kates have to swerve hard to sink some more battleships, whereas the one Kate squadron turn around and try to sink Conway again, nailing her on her feet this time.
>The Zeroes hastily outgun some American fighters, even though a few of them are taken with it.

A6M Zero Squadron #351: "We showed those American dogfighters our taste of fine lead!"

>The communications tower and all sirens at Pearl Harbor are nothing more than dust, the alert meter however jumped to 50%, putting Pearl Harbor at Code Yellow status.
>Half of all NAS battleships, a few destroyers and cruisers, including Conway are sunk. 65% of American fighters and 50% of American bombers are destroyed. The time of day is a quarter to 07:00.

Girding on her outfit and hastening out of the deployment house, the North American carrier Enterprise entered into a scene of utter chaos. A swarm of North American and Abyssal aircraft did battle with their Lucian aggressors, barely even clearing her head with their shots. Dozens of Abyssal ships had turned to smoldering hulks of scrap, many of them still sitting in dock. Occasionally one of their Hellcats would bag a bandit, only for its fanatical pilot to ram her plane into the closest vessel.
At the end of the pier she found Yorktown and Lincoln swiftly emptying their quivers. With Saratoga in tow and the M3 carbine in her hands, Enterprise made haste to join them.

Lincoln: "Big E?! Aren't you a sight for sore eyes!"
Yorktown: "We're in a hell of a jam here! Forget tactics; just launch as many fighters as you can!"

With curt nods, the Mark 3 carriers raised their guns. One clip from Enterprise's semi-auto would produce a whole squadron of Hellcats to intercept the fighters, while Saratoga's Thompson emptied its entire drum magazine of Corsairs at the attackers.
The conversation continued as they reloaded.

Enterprise: "What's the story? Why're they attacking?"
Saratoga: "Why d'ya think, toots?! They wanna kneecap us before the big war!"
Lincoln: "I had a hunch..."
Yorktown: "... but I never thought they'd be so callous!"

Second clip, this time P-40s. Their skilled pilots worked in tandem with Lincoln's Wildcats, baiting Zeroes before catching them in a crossfire.

Yorktown: "Sara, Big E! Keep to the shallowest parts of the harbor! That way they won't be able to sink ya."

Meanwhile, Yorktown tracked her recon planes - Hellcats with droptanks - all across the island. These fighters had to come from somewhere, and finding the enemy carrier group might've allowed a devastating second strike.

Albeit at considerable cost to their own, Allied forces have downed over a hundred planes from the first attack wave. Most Abyssal ships are awake by now and the resident Anchorage Princess has assumed her station on Ford Island, raising the island's Alert Level by 25%.
American planes actively hunt for the enemy carrier, but their search is concentrated largely in the south. They have no idea where to find the flattops, unless perhaps they follow some of the returning attackers.

>Given their large numbers of enemy aircraft, the IJN have lost about 80% of their aircraft, still putting honor beyond everything else. They radio in on the Admiral whilst trying to strafe hard to avoid a gruesome end.

A6M Zero Squadron #101: "We're being outgunned, Admiral! Some enemy patrols are looking for you by this time."
Houki: "Damn. Those American dogfighters, we thought they learned a lesson. Keep those fighters distracted for as long as you can! Kates, finish whatever you're doing and get back to our position! Vals, go after the Enterprise, Saratoga, and Lincoln!"
Val Squadron #64: "We're on it, Admiral!"
Kate Squadron: #90: "We will help the Vals in dishing out the pain."

>Yamato's radar starts to ping, indicating they are close to detection from where they're standing, even with engines turned off.
>The Enterprise, Saratoga, and Lincoln sustain only minor damage. It is the first time in many years the IJN planes are ashamed and forced to retreat.

Yamato: "Admiral, I'm getting a faint signal that a nearby enemy patrol is sighted 10 nautical kilometers from us, bearing forty-five, sharp range. It's probably an enemy cruiser patrol.
Nagato: "In our case, we must get our first wave fighters back to our carriers ASAP."
Akagi: "All first wave planes, time's up! Return to hangar immediately!"
Val Squadron #64: "Acknowledged, Carrier Division One, we're heading home, double time!"
Akagi: "All carriers, launch the second wave! Shindens, Judies, Oscars, Raidens, and Jills, let's mop up the rest and call it a day."

>The second wave begins, the heavy-hitters with better armor and weaponry are launched, consisting of 40 Shindens, 40 Judies, 40 Oscars, 40 Raidens, and 40 Jills, making it 200. All of them are en route to the harbor to finish any unfinished tasks from the first wave, and maybe even catch the enemy admiral off-guard.
>The enemy pilots are so confused, they keep circling around the harbor until they get dizzy and some even go so far as to crash each other, keeping the alert level from ever reaching 100%. This crazy act stunned the enemy carriers.

>The IJN ships positioned out at sea are only a few moments away before turning on their hitpoints display, by now 85% of American fighters are gone, 90% of American bombers are destroyed, almost all NAS battleships are sunk, half of the destroyers still remain, all PTs are gone, some landing boats sunk, and minor damage dealt to Enterprise, Saratoga, and Lincoln.
>In addition, a few lucky Vals manage to destroy the enemy airfield and partial damage to the shipyard before getting shot down, leaving only 10 Kates and 8 Zeroes remaining.
>The alert meter is at 90%, and Pearl Harbor is now Code Orange. The time of day is now 07:00.

By then, Admiral Taylor and company had retreated to a camouflaged command tent just across the water from Ford Island. Concealed under ersatz bushes and a thicket of trees, the Lucian pilots likely never even noticed it.

Nakamura was there, along with a handful of scuffled, sooty princesses. Their enemies had planned prudently - the Abyssal armory had been among the first buildings struck by the Vals, and their dormitories were quick to follow.

Nakamura: "Ivy!"
Taylor: "Natsu!"

The commodore embraced her admiral with a long, tight squeeze. It was plain that she was tearing up.

Nakamura: "When I saw the bombs hit by the shipyards... I thought-"
Taylor: "I was gone? Heh, it's all thanks to her."

Ivy ushered everyone's eyes over to the Air Defense Princess. She nodded gracefully, assuring that it was the least she could do.

Taylor: "What's the situation? Where's the admiral?"

At that second inquiry, a great hush fell about the room. The princesses all looked at each other uncomfortably, pursing lips and balling fists before one of the destroyer princesses spoke up.

Destroyer Princess Solomon: "He's... gone, miss. I saw it happen; a lucky bomb from one of the Vals."

Whatever the princess saw, Ivy could tell it wasn't pretty. Her hand was clutched over her heart, her eyes downcast, her face a mix between sadness and disgust.
It was at this point that the youngest of them began to sob. Sensing her anguish, Nakamura knelt down and cradled her face against her shoulder, whispering gentle reassurance in her little ear.

Destroyer Princess Solomon: "He was... in the courtyard outside our dormitory. Making sure we got out safe..."
Taylor: "Mm, I see... If there's anything left, I'd ask you, please try to salvage his cap. Admiral Thotep was an inspiration to many, and a dear friend of mine throughout my time with him. We should not wish for him to be forgotten."
Destroyer Princess Solomon: "Of course ma'am. Thank you ma'am."
Taylor: "... Which begs the question, which of you is in charge?"

Another round of shifting gazes. This time, all eyes eventually ended up on the tallest of the bunch. She was a wide, well-built ship, boasting great silver blades in the place of her hands, and a massive displacement in her midsection.

Harbor Princess Pearl: "I was his secretary, I have the say. But, Admiral..."
Taylor: "Hmm?"
Harbor Princess Pearl: "With all due respect ma'am, I'd hesitate to tell you this under normal circumstances, but Admiral Thotep thought rather highly of you these past few months. He kept a copy of your service record on his desk at all times, and ruminated aloud about the tenacity of your fleet. Were he not ageless, he might've considered you his equal."
Taylor: "And, perhaps, the inheritor of the Abyssal Fleet?"

The princess nodded in return.
Ivy inhaled deeply. It was quite a lot to take in.

Taylor: "Well... With all due respect, I don't know if I could ever match Grand Admiral Thotep's unique charisma and ruthlessness as a commander, but if that's what you girls wish, I'll damn well try to."

Within moments, the mood decidedly picked up among the princesses. They were still scuffed, sooty, and forlorn from the loss of their loved ones, but a speck of hope now glimmered in their eyes.

Taylor: "Commodore, get me a damage report by oh-twelve-hundred hours tomorrow morning. The rest of you are to search for survivors and catalog casualties. Enlist the help of all non-combat personnel; even the local populace if you have to. We can't afford to lose any more-"

That's when she heard it. Without saying a word she rushed to the tent flap.
Off in the distance, flying high above the mountain range, a gigantic formation of small planes descended upon Pearl.

Taylor: "Oh dear lord..."

~***~

At that moment, in the great pool just north of Ford Island, the remaining North American carriers watched hundreds of planes hurtle straight at them. Lincoln, the youngest of the lot, clung to her bow and breathed heavily. Enterprise kept the stiff upper lip, Saratoga smiled, and all Yorktown could do was sigh.

Lincoln: "I'm out of arrows."
Saratoga: "Man, where's a Fletcher when ya need one?"
Lincoln: "Is this really the time for puns?!"
Yorktown: "You have a better idea?!"

They could hear them now, as they closed to gunnery range. The harbor's remaining flak guns downed over a dozen, but their evasive maneuvers minimized further casualties.

Saratoga: "Welp, this is it gals! Smoke if ya got 'em."

As she lit up, Enterprise glanced at her with a queer look.

Enterprise: "I didn't know you smoked."
Saratoga: "I don't! I just figured it'd be fun to say."

While Saratoga hacked and sputtered, Enterprise performed one last check of her magazine bag. She really wished she had another clip of Panthers.
Though the navy blue jets shredded the enemy's Oscars, there were too few of them to make a difference. The attackers pressed on.

Enterprise: "Ladies, it's been a pleasure. Wherever the wind takes us, I wish all of you you the best of luck."

This time there were no quips. With one last nod exchanged between all, the carriers broke off for evasive maneuvers. Perhaps by some miracle, at least one of them would survive the ordeal.

Yorktown: "I should've anticipated the second wave. If only I'd been smarter and stronger, perhaps..."

Hearing the bombs whistling on the way to her back, the carrier clutched her bow tightly. Her only solace was that the Thunderer and New Jersey still survived at Midway, and that their valiant efforts had sunk an entire convoy of troop transports.
There would be no invasion. They could still fight back. And perhaps, once Medusa finally rebuilt them, she'd finally be reunited with her younger sister.

Yorktown: "It's all up to you now, admiral... I'm so sorry."

There was the sound of splintering wood, and the sickening snap of her central bulkhead. The last thing she saw was the torpedo headed straight for her face, before the world vanished in a flash.

>With not too many minutes on the mission timer before the Abyssals fully gain attention to what's happening all around, the second wave must act quickly to make an example of IJN superiority over the Americans.
>Houki read the time on her old watch, suggesting urgency on the mission.

Houki: "This is your Admiral to all second wave planes, you only have ten minutes before they go full alert and we have to leave."
Ki-43 Oscar Squadron #296: "We won't disappoint you, Admiral. We'll make this day a special one to remember us all!"
Akagi: "Ok, I'll have to speak fast, and only once: Oscars and Raidens, deal with the remaining enemy aircraft, Shindens, light up your rocket packs on any ground installations our first wave didn't fully destroy, Judies and Jills, mop up any leftover afloat enemy ships before they escape."
B6N Jill Squadron #166: "Copy that, Carrier Division One. Unit 166, out!"

>As the time of day approaches 07:20, the IJN only have until the minute hand reaches the six, and that's when things will start to go utterly wrong.
>The Jills and Judies work in tandem around the shallow waters to begin their torpedo and depth charge runs on small ships and submarines stationed at the shipyard, whereas the Shindens split into two large formations, one to go after the shipyard and level it, and the other to find the Admiral.
>The Oscars and Raidens give the enemy fighters a really hard time, finally after breaking through them, they then attempt to use their machineguns to level the air defence turrets and bunkers to further minimize harm to their teammates.
>After blowing up the whole shipyard in a huge explosion, the Shindens then go meet up the other Shindens and coordinate their search for the Admiral.
>The reunited Shindens lit up their remaining rockets and fire all at once in a tight spread where the Admiral is hiding, and it hit its mark.

Shinden Squadron #442: "The enemy Admiral is no more, ma'am! She's finished!"
Houki: "We're ecstatic to hear you of this! Excellent work! This surprise attack is going really well!"
Shinden Squadron #442: "No, thank you, Admiral!"

>Meanwhile, the Judies and Jills have only less than five minutes to wrap up, they saved all their remaining torpedoes for the enemy carriers.
>They go toe-to-toe with Enterprise, Saratoga, Lincoln, and Yorktown, given that they are trying to escape they seemed, they dive in and drop their torpedoes before sweeping back up. Within seconds, all those four carriers are taking on the water line hard, taking major damage.

B6N Jill Squadron #166: "Jill Unit 166, we landed huge holes on the enemy carriers. They're certain to sink within moments."
Houki: "I'm so proud of you- huh, wait a minute. We're running out of time, we have to go! You all did well, but we must get off O'ahu!"
Yamato: "This is Flagship Yamato of the 17th Imperial fleet, we are about to start our engines and reverse course. We're leaving."
Akagi: "All second wave planes, return to hangar at once. Our mission is done, we have crippled Pearl Harbor to her knees."
All Kanmusu ships: cheers

>Pretty much everything on Pearl Harbor is wrecked, and Admiral Taylor's life is now a memory among the Abyssal Fleet.
>By this time, the alert level is now at 100%, prompting a Code Red. Only a few dozen standing ships get to see the true horror of the entire harbor.
>The 17th KanMusu Fleet manage to leave O'ahu in time before detection, averting disaster. Nearly the whole first wave and minor fatalties on the second wave for the IJN is of little concern to Akagi and the carriers.

I wonder what the Abyssals back at the harbor, but more importantly, President Cordelia Thompson have to say about this.

My next mission is at Nikumaroro. I just woken up to start the day.

My 17th KanMusu fleet will have to refuel at Kiribati, a safe haven for the IJN as an emergency refueling but non-essential location. Despite the victory back at Pearl for the IJN, Hawai'i is still under Abyssal territory.

The upcoming battle will take place at night involving a search-and-rescue mission with the captured transports, and only my five submarines will participate: Goya, Iku, Shioi, Nimu, and Maruyu.

~Pre-battle scene of Nikumaroro~

The victory over at Pearl was a modest success, but the 17th KanMusu fleet are now kilometers from home, and are desperately trying to find a safe island somewhere in the Pacific before their engines run dry.
Finding an island during stressful times like this can be difficult for them, since they're so deep in enemy territory, they are at greatest risk of getting blown to shreds wherever they are. Fortunately, one such island attracted the fleet girls' attention, Kiribati. While not essential for the war effort, they are certain they head there for refueling and docking due to their hospitality.
Then again, it's only a matter of time before the Abyssals stage their revenge on them.

Houki: "Secretary Nagato, I think we see an island worth staying there!"
Nagato: "Then we waste no time in refueling and we should head back out to sea come tomorrow."

As the fleet girls park their shoes and unpack their compartments in Kiribati, the submarine girls are then briefed by Nagato that might interest them, whereas the others are hanging out in the beach.

Nagato: "All right, listen up, Goya. I have something very special in mind for you."
Goya: "What is it, Secretary?"
Nagato: "Intel reports of an island southwest of here regarding a few stranded fleet girls that need rescuing, and I need you and your crew to head out by nightfall to scope them out, free them, and return here alive."
Goya: "What's the catch?"
Nagato: "There will be searchlights, some destroyer escorts and seaplane tenders on watch, and the possibility of showers. Your stealth and movement skills should be able to bypass their patrols, but you have to make two runs, one to move in and free them, and two to move back out as quickly as you can before they notice."
Goya: "And our reward for returning them alive?"
Nagato: "They'll provide us the remodel parts, and I will ensure that they will also serve as auxiliary units."
Maruyu: "How risky will it be to pull all this off, Secretary?"

Nagato gives a heavy sigh, she looks southwest off in the distance from where she stands at the shoreline, then speaks again.

Nagato: "I can only tell how successful we've been so far, but this mission is going to be a nightmarish one. Before it became this, exactly 80 years ago, a famous pilot came to these parts during a one-time journey to show the world that she can fly was believed to be captured by our soldiers, but she gave her life away under mysterious circumstances. Very few knew this, the original U.S. Navy came to look for her these days and since then when the Abyssals start showing up, that's when the trail ran cold."

Yamato can be heard yelling for Nagato to come over and hang out with the others, but she declined.

Yamato: "Hey, Secretary! Do you want to stop by the inn and hang out?"
Nagato: "No thanks, I got something else important."
Mutsu: "You're going to miss out the wonderful accommodations the locals are having, they're very friendly here."
Nagato: "Well, unfortunately, I have very important plans for our future voyages ahead, so I'll be busy until I get some rest."
Mutsu: "Well, that's ok then. We'll see you later in the day."

The submarine crew, led by Goya, is planning to set course to Nikumaroro, hoping to get there safely before it gets too dark.
Nagato returns to her desk under the shade, trying to figure out the details of the mysterious island.

~Pre-battle scene ends~

>It is night, the waxing gibbous moon is in the sky, and the waves are calm. Nikumaroro, the one peculiar island where the captured transports are held for weeks, the five submarine girls: Goya, Iku, Shioi, Nimu, and Maruyu are going to do a bit of Silent Hunter to free some poor girls from the Abyssals.
>Normally, it wouldn't be safe for them to be out that late at night, but Nagato gave them her special permission to undergo this risky endeavor. They are capable of stealth and speed, but they are still years from becoming well-aged units, but thankfully, Nagato will provide at least a hint or two before nodding off to sleep at her desk back in Kiribati.
>Goya and her crew are nearing the shore of the island, but the moment they see the searchlights dead ahead over the southwestern horizon, she stopped and relays the orders to her teammates, dropping to a whisper.

Goya: "Ok, team. I can see the island, there's like only a few destroyers milling about, two lighthouses, one fortress between them, and the girls should be somewhere deep inside. We will have to sneak in without the intent of sinking anything unless they're in our paths. We will time their patrols so that we can slip by them."
Maruyu: "What are the chances?"
Goya: "It shouldn't be this hard, but the way the lighthouses we see darting back and forth, we can't get to the other side via the surface, we have to dive very deep to avoid them even though the crushing pressure can harm us. The only real detection is if we were forced to crash dive by the destroyers or the island itself. This will help keep them off our backs for a short time."
Maruyu: "So?"
Goya: "I suggest we start with the south end, the unguarded part, stick with us under low speed and only whispering, and we should have no problem."

>Alert meter is at 0%, status normal. The submarine crew begin their rescue by diving at skulking depth, just below periscope depth.
>Blue names indicate they are in stealth mode, only sonar or by surfacing should reveal them.

Stealth theme starts

Nagato is such a cutie. Pity we'll hafta sink her someday. <3 ]]

As the submarines rounded the southeast tip of the coral isle, they might've realized just how well it was defended. The sea floor was exceedingly shallow near the beach, forcing them several miles off the coast to avoid detection. Patrol frigates circled the island in pairs. And as Goya and company drew near the tiny inlet to the west, they picked up the trace of a familiar enemy lurking in the deep.
Mines. Dozens of them laid out in a wide fan before the inlet, some clustered into clumps of ten. The submarines could easily bypass them with the aid of their sonars, but they'd slow them down considerably, and the shallow water made approach a thorny proposition.
They'd have to act fast. At 2 A.M. local time, the tide was just starting to rise.

>Goya and the team are aware they only have so few hours left before considering silent rigging, and without a word, they slowly wade through the minefield at a dead slow speed (2 knots), narrowly avoided contact and slipped by.
>The submarine team manages to get to the southern end but how close they can get to the center of the island without detection is beyond their measure. Given that the searchlight keeps darting back and forth, they dive almost into crush depth and slip through.
>Time of day at Nikumaroro is about 2:15, and some clouds start picking up, blocking the moon. A storm might come within the next hour.

Goya: whispers "Ok, we just slipped through the searchlights, but now we have to deal with bypassing the fortress in the center. Dead ahead, there is a safe spot underneath the bunker where we can quickly unpack ourselves, get inside, secure the girls, get out the same way we came, and head back to Kiribati."
Shioi: whispers "B-but, how?"
Goya: whispers "No time to explain, we could be caught at any moment, now get moving!"

>Alert meter is still at 0%, status is still normal.

Just as Goya said that however, her sonar suite sensed a new contact rounding the fortress in the middle of the lagoon. A quick peek through the persiscopes revealed her to be a seaplane tender - Barnegat class -  wearing a long leather hood and an ivory-handled Peacemaker at her hip.
She sailed leisurely through the shallow lagoon, apparently unaware of the hunters lurking within. Stopping almost directly above Goya and company, she knelt down to welcome a pair of floatplanes.

Yakutat: "There y'are. 'Bout time, I was startin' to get worried... Uh-huh? ... Don't worry cutie, you'll be safe with me."

Time was scarce, and there was little point in sinking the tender. As the vessel stowed the seaplanes back in her belt, Goya likely would've moved on.
A dimly-lit concrete dock presented itself on the eastern face of the fortress. The guards were absent from the pier, and the seaplane tender was content to wade about the west side of the lagoon.
By anyone's mark, it was the perfect opportunity.

>The submarine team stopped and held their breaths for who knows how long whilst Yakutat resumes her shift. They then release their breath and sail slowly but due to shallow depth, they cannot dive any deeper below periscope depth.
>Goya smiles as she notices a backdoor inside the fortress. The moment they come ashore, they unpack themselves; take off their sailing shoes and start heading in. There are only about five captured girls; three are seaplane tenders, one fleet oiler, and one repair ship: Kamoi, Mizuho, Akitsushima, Hayasui, and Akashi.

Goya: "Girls, we're here to get you out of here!"
Kamoi: "You could've got yourself in trouble again, Goya? Anyways, I'm Kamoi, leader of a special team of auxiliary KanMusu who were once stationed at New Guinea before we got captured and being left for dead, until you arrived."
Goya: "Well, at least they didn't intend to sink you; they just wanted to use you as part of their own effort."
Kamoi: "Right, so it appears as of now, we can't stand being trapped in cages forever. It's time for us to move out. Unlike you, we can't dive, so you have to carry us all the way back."
Maruyu: "And risking the alarm? Sounds like another jailbreak for us, then."
Akashi: "You are lucky I'm your newly rescued auxiliary repair tender, as long as you're up and running, I'll fix you right up!"

Just then, as soon as the submarine team pulls the levers to release the girls and lead them to the shore, they knew that going back to Kiribati undetected is futile and have to hightail out of there, and fast.
Alert level is instantly jumped to 100%, prompting a Code Red and annoying alarm sounds go off all over the place.
